– What is Sales and Trading –
Sales and trading is one of the key functions in Capital Markets. The term refers to various activities related to the buying and selling of securities or other financial instruments.
The Sales component refers to the investment bank’s sales force, whose primary job is to call on institutional and high-net-worth investors to suggest trading ideas and take orders. Sales desks then communicate their clients’ orders to the appropriate trading desks, who can price and execute trades, or structure new products that fit a specific need.
Trading desks provide liquidity for clients to trade on and act as counterparties on the other side of the trade. That’s why traders in the sales and trading divisions of an investment bank are often referred to as market makers. They benefit from the bid – offer spread they charge as well as taking trading positions. Banks also undertake risk through proprietary trading, done by a special set of traders who do not interface with clients and through “principal risk”, risk undertaken by a trader after he buys or sells a product to a client and does not hedge his total exposure.
